Romans 6:1-12 (Topic: Walk in Newness of Life)

To understand these verses, we need to go back to the previous chapter. And the previous chapter, talks about Jesus who died, buried and rose again to give eternal life (in Heaven) to anyone who would believe Him by Faith. Meaning, we believe that there’s no other way to get to Heaven other than Jesus Christ for the sacrifice He had done for many.

John 14:6 - Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

When someone accepts Jesus as his/her Savior by trusting and then repenting of his sins and to depart from it and follow Jesus's way of life, then that person is saved by Grace. So we see the term grace used in Romans 6:1-12.

The thief beside Jesus was saved by Grace by Jesus Christ, for the thief believed Jesus as his last hope before his death. He knew Jesus is God for he defended Jesus from the other thief’s insult. So when he said to Jesus “remember me…”, he has already trusted Jesus by Faith which is salvation by Grace and not of works where merit system is applied.

Luke 23:39-43 - And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

So, apostle Paul in Verse 1 of Roman 6, gives an rhetorical question that if we have truly believe and trust Christ Jesus, should we continue in sin? Of course no. Or else our faith on Him is fake.

And Verse 2 says, that if we follow Jesus now being forgiven of our sins, how can we live and love sin again?

In Verses 3-6, it talks about how that after someone trusted and obeyed Jesus, that someone have also died like Jesus, only that he/she died in his/her sins and lives a new life pleasing Jesus Christ.

Verse 7, talks again about being dead in sin when we trust Jesus and being freed from sin as well.

Verse 8, talks about the hope of anyone who trust and obey Jesus, that they will also be where Jesus is, which is in Heaven.

Verses 9-10, talks about the death and resurrection of Jesus how that He died once to offer Himself a perfect sacrifice for all mankind and that He lives again to give hope to anyone who trust and obey Him.

Verses 11-12, pictures how we die in our sins after we follow Jesus and how we live forever with Him, either now or in the next life. And how we should at all cost deny or reject sin in our life even in our last breath because we want to please Jesus Christ in our life.
